Cruising with Ruben & the Jets is the fourth studio album by the Mothers of Invention. Released on December 2, 1968, on Bizarre and Verve Records with distribution by MGM Records, it was subsequently remixed by Frank Zappa and reissued independently. As with the band's previous three albums, it is a concept album, influenced by 1950s doo wop and rock and roll.

Format: Vinyl, LP, Album, Promo, Stereo, Gatefold. The record comes in a standard stereo cover- it has the familiar small, round "Mothers of Invention" sticker on the front cover, but no promotional designations of any kind. The package also included the "How to Comb and Set a Jelly Roll" and "How to Dance the Bop" inserts. It is of some interest that this pressing also utilizes what appear to be 1968-style white Verve promo labels with a later, revised version of the label copy & typography.

Acerbic Carefree Cynical/Sarcastic Ironic Irreverent Silly Snide. The Mothers of Invention, Frank Zappa. Cruising with Ruben & the Jets. Frank Zappa loved '50s doo wop music. He grew up with it, collected it, and it was the first kind of pop music he wrote ("Memories of El Monte," recorded by the Penguins in 1962). Cruising with Ruben & the Jets, the Mothers of Invention's fourth LP, is a collection of such music, all Zappa originals (some co-written with MOI singer Ray Collins). To the unexperienced, songs like "Cheap Thrills," "Deseri," and "Jelly Roll Gum Drop" may sound like an average doo wop song.

On the first couple of Mothers of Invention albums you could also clearly hear the influence from the fifties Doo Woop and RīnīB scene, but the style was mixed with more regular sixties rock, blues and avant garde moments. Here there are only Doo Woop and RīnīB songs. There are a couple of songs from The Mothers Of Inventionīs debut album Freak Out which they have re-arranged and re-recorded, but the rest are new songs. There isnīt much to say about the structure of the songs or their innovative nature because the songs are very simple as it generally is in this style. In Cruising with Ruben and the Jets, Zappa wanted to tribute all those doo wop and R n' b groups he was a fan in the 50's. This is a parody album and it has no progressive content at all, but it's good to listen once in a while. The melodies are addictive and the vocals hilarious, typical Zappa humour.

The Mothers of Invention were an American rock band from California. Formed in 1964, their work is marked by the use of sonic experimentation, innovative album art, and elaborate live shows. Originally an R&B band called the Soul Giants, the band's first lineup included Ray Collins, David Coronado, Ray Hunt, Roy Estrada and Jimmy Carl Black. Frank Zappa was asked to take over as the guitarist following a fight between Collins and Coronado, the band's original saxophonist/leader.

Going into Ruben, the listener must not expect this to be like any of the other Mothers albums due to the material, in which none of the quirky lyrics are present, with them being replaced with straightforward love songs in the vein of Go Cry On Somebody Else’s Shoulder and Motherly Love from Freak Out! The doo-wop sound takes a few listens to get used to, and after the third or fourth try, it’ll be sure to grab your attention  . With Cruising, once the album starts, it's consistently typical 50s doo-wap throughout. SsPpAaMm July 26th 2014. I agree with the three.

2, 1968, a mysterious group of pompadoured cartoon faces turned back the clock of music history to highlight the golden era of doo-wop with their self-referencing album Cruising With Ruben & the Jets.
