Mount Kimbie - Crooks & Lovers If 2010 is the year that the "dubstep" full-length articulated just how multicolored and ever-shifting the sonic terrain within the outdated tag has become, then it's arguably Paul Rose's Hotflush Recordings that's been at the forefront of the showcase

Album · 2010 · 11 Songs. Crooks & Lovers Mount Kimbie. Listen on Apple Music.

Released July 19, 2010. Crooks & Lovers Tracklist. 1. Tunnel Vision Lyrics.

One of post-dubstep's bright lights is Mount Kimbie, a London duo who delivered two promising EPs last year. Their debut album pushes the sound into lonely, fragmented places, but locates pockets of warmth. The haunted piano-wire of "Before I Move Off" is nicely offset by a strolling guitar riff and playful vocals. It may feel slight at times, but Crooks & Lovers leaves you wanting more.

Mount Kimbie is an English electronic music duo consisting of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos. Formed in 2008, the duo departed from the musical template of the UK dubstep scene, releasing early EPs Maybes and Sketch on Glass to critical praise the following year. Their debut album Crooks & Lovers in 2010 received further acclaim. The band signed with Warp Records in 2012, and released their second album Cold Spring Fault Less Youth the following year and third album Love What Survives in September 2017. They have collaborated with artists such as James Blake, King Krule, and Micachu. In September 2015, Mount Kimbie hosted a weekly residency every Tuesday, throughout September, with London based online radio station NTS Radio.

Crooks & Lovers is an album of abrupt changes and paradoxes, at once organic and heavily processed, drowsy and yet with moments of eyes-on-stalks urgency, acoustically sweet and electrically charged. It's akin to gently drifting in and out of consciousness on a bus trip, only to be sporadically jolted back into consciousness. Tunnelvision, the opener, floats down from some odd, hazy place, reminiscent of soon-to-be-revived oceanic 80s rockers . Kane, a mix of short, acoustic riffs, disembodied voices and an adjacent rhythm shuffling by like a caterpillar. Unmoored and out there, Mount Kimbie come across in interviews as a little startled themselves by what they've come up with, and continue to come up with, but that's all to the good. They've no idea where they're going.

I would love a reissue on a single LP, please. Pledge my support.
  • Envias
My copy skips on the first track as well and in the middle of the side 4. What a shame for this great album.I will purchase the CD...
  • Mysterious Wrench
my needle skips also over the first track is it an edition error?
  • Jerdodov
I have the exact same problem. Other than that it is very solid.
  • net rider
Yes, the entire first track is a disaster. It should never have been released like this...
  • Tiainar
curious question; does anyone know who or what the 'Bear' in 'Ode to Bear' refers to? Is it a reference to Owsley Stanley? since its release, Crooks & Lovers has been one of my favourite LPs. I remember vividly the first time I heard it (thanks, Moony). It was a breath of fresh air.
  • Erennge
I got this album about a month ago, and have the same problem.Interesting you've got the same problem as well.
  • Ieregr

Same issue. Thought about giving back the album, but what the hell - if it's a common issue... Bummer though, I hate bad pressings! Hard-earned cash shelled out by music connoisseurs, and they get half-assed pressings.
  • Dikus
yes. same problem. i thought to buy another copy, but it seems its a common problem with this pressing. i guess.

This is a great album that really shows the development of sound in this group. The mending of lo-fi guitar and vocal elements coupled with crunchy drum beats and bass make a very dynamic and aurally pleasing experience. The album starts out with "Tunnelvision", a garage-esque beat coupled with sliced acoustic guitar and vocal samples, next up is "Would Know", this track has a lot more dubstep influence than the previous and uses more electronic sounds. Then we have "Before I Move Off", this track starts off very gloomy and out of tune but develops into a deep two stepper that's almost indicative of Burial's style. "Blind Night Errand" is a garage track with heavy elements of electroclash, with a very calming outro into "Adriatic", Adriatic is a very calming track led completely by acoustic guitar and 2 vocal samples. It's simple but calming. "Carobonated" starts out as a disco track, almost acid-like. But develops into a garage track with sliced vocals and looming pads that'll entrance you. "Ruby" is your standard chilled out dubstep track. "Ode To Bear" is my favourite track on this album, it has elements of accordion and simple reverberated effects at the beginning, as it develops it becomes quite a complex and very emotional soundscape, this track will capture you. "Field" is a very guitar driven track with a simple dubstep beat in the back, coupled with vocal samples it's a nice track to keep you uplifted towards the end of this album. "Mayor", this track is one of the fastest pace out of all the tracks, it is almost entirely synth based unlike the rest of the album. "Between Time" is the final track and it sounds it. This track looms on with the only purcussion being a snare. The rest of the track is simply bass plucking. This album is definitely one of my favourites and I encourage listening to it start to finish while under the influence.9.7/10

not necessarily a huge achievement, but a pleasant album nevertheless. Wish it wasn't 2 lp's though, its hardly over 35 minutes..
