Room Inside the World is the third studio album by Canadian art punk band, Ought. The album was released on February 16, 2018, through Merge Records. Room Inside the World received critical acclaim upon its release.
Ought’s third album, Room Inside the World, straightens out their sound. It offers a more refined and sophisticated new wave palette, redolent of the 1980s to an extreme, and it finds Darcy really singing-about isolation, tentative feelings, self-possession and lack thereof. Most of the record is cast in a newly muted and noirish hue with flourishes of vibraphone, sax, and clarinet. The best Room Inside the World songs still retain some post-punk fragmentation. Take Everything fares better when it moves away from swirling psychedelia and towards lovely, threadbare balladeering, with images of dreaming and the soul’s indecision.

The drum machine-led, synth-furnished single "These 3 Things" was the first the world would hear from Montreal band Ought's third full-length offering. In some camps, this perceived seismic style shift was indicative of the band's move from experimental post-rock label Constellation to the relatively mainstream indie of Merge Records which, in turn, some speculated, signaled a swing toward more commercially palatable music. Evidently, no such cynical development has taken place; Ought's evolution proves to be far more interesting. Truth be told, they've long been.
Album · 2018 · 9 Songs. Ought’s first couple of albums offered a tense, splintered if anthemic vision of post-punk, leavening their discord with hooks, their hail with the occasional hit of sunshine. Far more beautiful but no less exploratory, their third album finds them ascending to the gloomy grandeur of bands like The National or Protomartyr, from the gentle grit of Disgraced in America to the Joy Division-ish These 3 Things to the striking Desire, which blooms from a jagged whisper to a soul-dredging ballad. The shift in tone takes effect immediately on "Into the Sea", which begins quietly with piano chords and the throaty delivery of the line, "I see the stain in the people no. The song develops into a churning, groovy post-punk tune that manages to be recognizable as Ought but is a whole lot smoother in its construction and it stripped down in a lot of ways. Ought's ability to fully inhabit and execute the sound they are aiming for on any given album is notable, of course, and it doesn't necessarily mean that there aren't hints of how each sonic style affects the others. Disaffectation" and "Take Everything" are prime examples of the band translating their fascination with harmonic tension into the context of a cleaner sound.
Room Inside the World is a trove of art-rock and post-punk. Always leaving the listener quite unsure of its potential, it cements Ought’s reputation as an exciting band perfectly capable of evolution and reinvention. Very nice catchy art-rock/post-punk vibes that make an album full of very beautiful texturized vocal melodies and guitar rhythms. It actually very much reminds me of The Magnetic Feels meets Iceage and they decided to create an album inspired by Talk Talk. do yourself a favour and check it out!.
