Its Edge of Sanitys second 1997 album release (the other being "Infernal", which was released in February 1997) and an attempt to salvage the band after Lead vocalist Dan Swan jumped ship. He is replaced here by former Pa. hy. Monium vocalist Robert Karlsson. The salvation attempt failed though, and "Cryptic" was the only Edge of Sanity album to feature this lineup. People might argue against that, but Cryptic proves that I'm right. This album is generic and uninspired death metal, and is a huge disappointment in the band's discography. Edge of Sanity's previous album, Infernal was an awkward and flawed release, but the album had many high quality moments thanks to Dan Swan. With this album it's very obvious that Edge of Sanity is struggling without their frontman.
As an Edge of Sanity album it sticks out like a sore thumb (no Swanö, no prog, etc), there is no denying that, but there really are some phenomenal songs here. Clocking in at a brief 35 and a half minutes, the album is well worth a listen and perhaps a few more visits if it grabs you. Crimson II (2003). As if back from the dead and with a vengeance, Dan Swanö returns as the sole member of Edge of Sanity. Crimson II shows an evolution in the band’s sound with the Prog and Symphonic tendencies heard in the past brought to the forefront, most notably with the keyboards and synths
Edge Of Sanity is one of those bands which everyone who has heard them respects for their willingness to go places not really explored within the bounds of their genre. It’s easy to call Edge Of Sanity a simple death/melodic death metal band previous to this release, stemming from their pure death metal roots with their debut Nothing But Death Remains up to their superb, melodic, and also melancholic Purgatory Afterglow. They play a variation of Swedish death metal virtually unseen before.
