The Orchestra is a 18 piece Big Band, that features prominent Danish jazz musicians and composers. From The orchestra's debut performance at the Montruex Jazz festival in 1991. the band has a particular homogenous and transparent sound, that conveys the musicians dedication to working as a unit - and to playing the often difficult music with the strongest possible conviction. The different composers cover a very wide scope off musical concepts, ranging from groove-and melodic oriented approaches to inspiration from contemporary classical composers. A common factor though, is an awareness.

The Würzburg Jazz Orchestra, formed only two years ago by trombonist Markus Geiselhart, hit the ground running with a tribute to the late trumpeter Don Ellis and within a year had recorded its first album, Artistry in Rhythm, dedicated to the music of the Stan Kenton Orchestra. It's an ambitious start, and by most standards a good one as well. While it is clear from the opening measure that this isn't Stan Kenton, it is nonetheless a very good band playing very good music at a fairly high level. Geiselhart, who has since moved to Vienna, Austria, but remains the orchestra's leader, has his charges well-prepared for this concert performance, which not only includes compositions by Kenton but charts by Bill Holman, Lennie Niehaus, Bill Russo, Gerry Mulligan and even Bob Graettinger ("You Go to My Head, on which the ensemble experiences its greatest hardships).

An orchestra is a group of musicians who play together on various instruments. Sometimes it performs alone,at other times it plays along with a group of singers. Orchestras give concerts and play for ballets or operas. The leading first violinist is the concertmaster of the orchestra. He helps the other musicians tune their instruments and serves as the assistant. Cellos and string basses play low sounds.
